Biography
Professor Matteo Montorfano graduated in Medicine with summa cum laude at University of Milan, Italy, in 1991 and completed his Residency in Cardiolgy with honors in Rome at Università La Sapienza in 1998.
Since November 2018 he is the Director of the Interventional Cardiology Unit at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy. He has an extensive experience in every field of interventional cardiology (percutaneous coronary and peripheral vascular interventions, structural heart interventions).
From March 2023 he is Associate Professor of Cardiology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and Director of the Master in Interventional Cardiology.
He is co-author of around 450 publications in the most important scientific journals in his field (including Circulation, Journal of American College of Cardiology, JAMA, JACC Cardiovascular Intervention).
Until today, his scientific work received more than 15.000 citations with an H-index of 59.
He holds many patents regarding devices used in the treatment of heart valve disease and he is co-founder of two medical start up companies developing new tools for the treatment of structural heart disease.

Clinical Activity
Extensive experience in percutaneous coronary intervention, including complex lesions (bifurcations, unprotected left main, chronic total occlusions, calcific lesions requiring adjunctive devices, such as rotablator, intravascular lithotripsy and laser).
Extensive experience in structural heart intervention: transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), percutaneous repair of mitral valve, percutaneous atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closures, left atrial appendage closure and percutaneous closure of paravalvular leaks.
Research Activity
Pioneer of the treatment of structural heart disease:
- Planning and performance of the first-in-men mitral valve-in-valve intervention and improvement of the transeptal technique for the treatment of degenerated mitral bioprostheses
- Development of a new sizing method (the LIRA method) for the percutaneous treatment of the aortic stenosis in patients with bicuspid anatomy
Principal Investigator and co-investigator of major international trials
Holder of many patents for the treatment of structural heart disease
Co-Founder of two start-up companies for the percutaneous treatment of valvular disease: Cephea Valve Technologies (developing a transcatheter prosthetic mitral valve) and Viv-Heart (developing a catheter for the treatment of aortic stenosis).
