Clinical responsibilities
Large experience as first operator in the surgical treatment of all kinds of adult cardiac disease. Mitral and tricuspid repair and mechanical circulatory support (LVAD/BiVAD/TAH) represent areas of specific expertise. Minimally invasive and trans-catheter valve interventions, together with aortic valve repair are currently the fields of major clinical and scientific interest.
Since 2009 he has been responsible for the “Heart failure surgery Unit and Mechanical Circulatory Support Programme” of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, San Raffaele University Hospital, Milan, Italy.
After a training period spent as a Fellow on mechanical support systems at the German Heart Institute in Berlin, he started (in close collaboration with the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit), a comprehensive program of mechanical circulatory support at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. This program is currently consolidated and includes the use of paracorporeal systems (ECMO venous-arterial and veno-venous, LVAD/RVAD/BiVAD type Levitronix-CentriMag), partially implantable systems (Incor, Jarvik, HeartMate II and III, Heartware) and total artificial heart (CardioWest).
Currently approximately 100 patients/year are treated with an ECMO system in our Unit and about 100 patients received an LVAD as destination therapy. The experience in this field is confirmed by the role of “proctor” for implantation of the HeartMate II and III left ventricular assist system (Thoratec) covered from the year 2015.
He has obtained the following implantation certifications:
– SynCardia Total artificial heart phase I training (Germany 24th February 2012)
– HeartMate III Masterclass, National Research Cardiac Surgery Center (Astana, Kazakhstan, June 30th-July 1st 2015)
National and international executive offices
Over the years, and more intensively since 2009, he has served in different roles the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS), the American Heart Association (AHA), the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (SICCH) and the Heart Valve Society (HVS).
In particular he has been:
– Chairman of the Working Group on Cardiovascular Surgery of the European Society of Cardiology (2014-2016).
– Member of the “Acquired Cardiac Disease Domain” of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (2012-2016)

– “Coordinator” (liaison) for Europe of the Leadership Committee of the Commission of the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia of the American Heart Association (2015-2017)
As a member of the “Congress Programme Committes” (CPC) of the ESC, EACTS and HVS he has systematically participated in the organization of the related annual meeting scientific programs.
