Research Interests and Activities

- Cardiovascular Clinical and Translational Research

Design and development of innovative diagnostic tools for the prevention of post-operative adverse events in patients implanted with Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) devices. Research activities are pursued in collaboration with the Anesthesia and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, the Coronary Intensive Care Unit, and the Coagulation Service and Thrombosis Research Unit of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (Prof. Alberto Zangrillo, Prof. Federico Pappalardo, Dr. Armando D’Angelo) in the framework of the Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute.

Research activities combine different approaches and methodologies, including:

ž patient-specific evaluation of the ventricular hemodynamics

ž analysis of the MCS system operating conditions (log-files) and evaluation of the patient-device physiological interplay

ž study and evaluation of blood cells shear-mediated damage

ž in vivo characterization of shear mediated platelet activation and prothrombotic activity

ž patient-tailored optimization of antithrombotic therapeutic regimen
