Biography
Umberto Capitanio is Associate Professor of Urology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, Italy, and a staff urologist at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, where he serves as Head of the Functional Unit of Operative Endoscopy and Day Surgery. He is also Group Leader of the Renal Cancer Lab at the Urological Research Institute (URI) of San Raffaele Hospital.
He received his medical degree and completed his residency in Urology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. He subsequently undertook international research and clinical training at the University of Montreal (Canada) and the OLV Robotic Surgery Institute in Belgium.
Since 2020, he has been a member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Renal Cell Carcinoma Guidelines Panel. He is also a member of the Scientific Research Group of the EAU Robotic Urology Section (ERUS) and the EAU Video Congress Committee. Previously, he served as Chairman of the EAU Young Academic Urologists Kidney Cancer Working Party.
His clinical and research activities primarily focus on renal cell carcinoma, with particular emphasis on robotic and nephron-sparing surgery, preservation of renal function, personalized treatment strategies, and the integration of surgical and systemic therapies. His main research interests also include advanced imaging of renal masses, radiogenomics, molecular tumor characterization, multidisciplinary cancer care, and the application of artificial intelligence to perioperative medicine.
He is Principal Investigator of nationally funded research projects supported by AIRC, the Italian Ministry of Health, and the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), aimed at developing innovative and personalized approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of renal cell carcinoma.
He has authored or coauthored more than 540 peer-reviewed scientific publications, with an H-index of 80 (Google Scholar, October 2026). His scientific work has been published in leading international journals, including The Lancet, The Lancet Oncology, Nature Communications, Nature Reviews Urology, Annals of Oncology, European Urology, European Urology Oncology, and The Journal of Urology.
